The busiest month for seaside festivals is not July

Most people think of the festival season as a summer thing. The data from our directory says something more interesting. Of the 1,076 festivals by the sea we list, 280 publish a month on their own website, and the busiest one is not July.
High tide is in October
47 festivals publish October as their month, ahead of September (45) and November (33). One likely contributor is the genre mix: 440 of our festivals are film festivals, a genre that is not tied to beach weather. We cannot prove the cause from this data, only the pattern.

What this means for planning
If you want a seafront to yourself, shoulder months are your friend: March and April together account for 55 of the dated festivals. If you want the full beach-party picture, look at June and July (45), where music and fireworks take over. The tide calendar shows the whole curve and lets you open any month.
A caveat about the numbers
This is a census of what festivals publish, not of everything that happens. A small folk festival without a website is not here, and a festival that reorganises its dates every year may show last year’s month. Always check the official site before you book.
